Item No. Discussion Action Old Business New Business 1.01 SD/DM welcomed all newcomers. They continued to explain what the Alliance is all about and why growing our membership was so important. They discussed the difficulty the Alliance has with dedicating so much time on the mandatory fundraising, accounting for the lack of assistance (25%) from the municipalities. DM/SD suggested we have residents contact the governing bodies about this lack of funding. We reviewed some of the events we sponsor outside the school: Bonding Thru Bowling Event (mother/son), Daddy Daughter Dance (father/daughter), Harlem Wizards Basketball Fundraiser, Car Show, Motorcycle Show, and the Holiday Singing Event. DM explained the very successful programs she performed in the schools and shared some of the positive feedback she has received. 1.02 DM went over old business. A. She stated we have a profit of $255.00 from the Holiday Concert; B. 2010 meeting dates were discussed and will be published by SD. We discussed preferences for the location and times. Most agreed that either location would be convenient and the 2nd or 3rd Wednesday would be workable; C. 2009 year end budget: DEDR approved $39,694.00; unspent $473.00; Cash match $9,924.00; unspent $220.00; D. 2010 budget (pending): Cash match of $7,794.00 was added by the Alliance; Cash match of $2,130.00 was added by UFT Township Committee in the form of FICA. Their contribution was reduced; Cash match of $4,313.00 is the amount the Alliance needs to raise this year to complete our obligation;
1.03 The Judge explained how important it is to educate the children on the importance of dunk driving and the law. She suggested possibly going into the schools for an assembly, or better yet, having classes observe an average day in court showing real people being given real restrictions/fines for driving under the influence. This might fall under the realm of Mr. Fallen who teaches a criminal justice class at the Allentown High School (AHS). DM will contact him for his input. DM 1.04 The Judge asked if children can receive "community credit" for attending/observing court. This would have to be addressed by the individual organizations. 1.05 SD discussed the upcoming Bonding Thru Bowling event (mother/son) from 2-4pm on 2/28/10. It will be at Hamilton Lanes. SD will publish the flyer with the details for distribution. SD 1.06 DM discussed the Safe Homes Program, the "goggles" program, and the function of the AHS Lifesaver’s Club. Questions arose about the declining membership as the year progresses, meeting times, etc. We explained. 1.07 DM received an e-mail from Rick Rivera asking if the Alliance meetings can be moved to 4:00 pm instead of 7 pm. SD asked the chairpersons and the remaining 2009 members their availability. None of them would be able to attend at that time. DM will reply to Rick Rivera and ask the Dr. Nagy, the High School principal, if another representative can be appointed. DM 1.08 MM asked if the Lifesavers meeting times could vary to allow students participating in sports and other extra curricular activities could attend. DM will ask Rick Rivera. DM 1.09 The following suggestions were brought up and will need to be explored further. For items that could involve school policy, DM will start the discussions with the school. A. Getting on the PTA Schedule; B. Elementary and Middle Schools positive posters for display; C. MADD-doing panel with families of victims of drunk drivers; D. Having inmates talk about their drunk driving convictions and the circumstances around it with students. A program DM is familiar with.
1.10 The topic of an "After Prom" was discussed. DM has information based on what Hamilton Township has done and is going to share it with MM and RG to review. It would involve an expenditure of funds and a strong commitment by the parents. We all agreed this would be a good event for AHS, but need a starting point. DM 1.11 SD stated after 7 years, regretfully, we are not going to host the Harlem Wizards Basketball Fundraiser in 2010. Even after we made numerous cuts to reduce our financial commitment to the event (producing the advertising journal, team sponsors, etc.), the profits have declined sharply and did not account for the time put in to promoting/organizing the event. We are going to schedule them for 2011 in hopes that after a year’s absence, the interest in seeing them will come back. 1.12 A discussion ensued regarding the concern for the Alliances potential demise. The new members expressed positive experiences they and their children had with the Alliance programs and events.
